India 2024: Sketches from South Mumbai

Here are a few sketches of architecture from South Bombay, all sketched as a part of our workshop. From Day 1, this is the ornate Flora Fountain. Now restored to its original stone, it was, for years, painted in a shiny white oil paint. I’m pretty sure that’s what it looked like when I sketched it 10 years ago.

This page, pulled together with text and red marker, is of architectural details from a row of Art Deco buildings. You can see our group of sketchers all pause on the sidewalk form time to time, to add to their page of vignettes.

The CST station is a grand building in the Mumbai Gothic style, so large and detailed it is intimidating to sketch. Framing bits of it through the arches of a nearby building make for a quick sketch that captures it’s character.

This last one is one of many shrines around Banganga Tank on Malabar Hill. Sketched as mid-day approached and I was thinking of the lunch we were going to be served on banana leaves…
