Urban Farming

Garden to Table Silicon Valley is the non-profit that runs Taylor Street Famrs in San Jose, where I sometimes volunteer with my kids. It’s an urban farm built on what was once a parking lot. With year-round veggies that they grow, worm compositing, and chickens, they’re always busy. And can always do with more volunteers (on Mondays, Wednesdays or Saturdays).

These sketches are from one such day when I turned up with my kids to volunteer. Since there were plenty of volunteers that day, I let the kids do the framework while I sketched. With a rotation of spring, summer, fall and winter crops, it’s always a busy time at the farm. This was earlier in the year in potato-planting season. Volunteers mulched and cleared beds, and started seedlings that morning.

Later that day, there was a Salad-Terrarium-Building session. See the four steps involved below and build your own terranium.

If you want to spend a happy Saturday morning helping grow food, volunteer here! As a bonus, all volunteers take home a bag of produce from the farm.
