Drawing Art

I like the idea of making marks that capture the marks of an artist. Which makes sketching in a museum a lot of fun. Like everything else I sketch, I can’t JUST draw the artwork. I like capturing it in it’s setting, with people looking at it and interacting with it.

Here are some sketches from my weekend trip to the San Jose Museum of Art.

This beautiful glass piece is from the just-concluded MEXICANISIMO show. Created by the brothers Jamex de la Torre and Einar de la Torre, it is a riot of texture, layers, color and form. And it put a smile on my face.

 

I will be headed back soon to see a show that open next week: The work of Mark Dean Veca. As a preview to the show, the artist  started on two murals on a wall by the museum cafe. Nearby lies a set of black pens and everyone is invited to contribute to the piece. My whole family had fun adding to the mural while I sketched them.

 

I just had to add this photograph. My niece added this lovely Seuss-esque head to the mural. My son decided to “complete” it and give it a body…
