Friends, jazz , wine and some sketching all in one afternoon is wonderful, but when the musicians playing while you sketch ( and try to drink a glass of wine, all at the same time) ARE your friends, it’s even more magical. So when Sunna and Scott said they were touring the West Coast with their trio, how could I not go?
Here are some sketches of the trio, pianist Sunna Gunnlaugs, bassist Thorgrimur Jonsson and drummer Scott McLemore at Chez Hanny in San Francisco.
The most fascinating part of drawing during a performance is looking back at your work and seeing how much of it-the line, the color, the splatters, comes not from what you literally see, but from the performance itself.
I doubt I’d be articulate if I tried explaining what the trio’s music is about, you will just HAVE to give it a listen on their website sunnagunnlaugs.com. And If you’re on the West Coast in the US, they just might be in your town very soon. Check for dates and veneus on their facebook page.
So Stunning!
