On Monday my’ “One Week One Hundred People” challenge sketches were limited to sketching from home. Some sketches of the kids. but mostly I just had my sketchbook by my computer as I worked. If I saw a person and dog walk by outside my window I sketched them. Sometimes I had to finish a sketch with a different dog and person who walked by later.
It quickly became apparent that I needed to study dogs a bit more to be able to draw them.

So I did that. That’s often how it goes for me: I draw from life and get as far as I can with what I know, then I turn back to studying what isn’t working for me. Not from life, but from books and from the infinite amount of information on the internet.

And then it’s back to trying to fit that book knowledge into my urban sketching practice. I go back and forth like this on a continual basis, learning in bite-sized chunks as I go along. Some of it sticks, some I need to come back and relearn. It never ends. That’s what I love about it.
