Back in Santa Cruz

I was back at Wilder Ranch State Park last weekend on what turned out to be the hottest week in January, with temperatures in the low 70s all week long. It was almost too hot at this beach we paused at. No big expanses of sand here, just little sand-filled coves along the cliffs.

Here is a closer look at those marks I am so enjoying making at the moment. Bobbing my brush onto the page, making small splotches and smudges until the marks blend together into a scene…

This is a quick sketch with two pens. Simple as it is, it has many things I think of as “Santa Cruz”: my favorite falafel join, Falafel of Santa Cruz, those lovely lampposts that you see on Mission Street, and even a guy on a motorbike. I can’t be sure it was a Harley, but it definitely had a presence.
