An obsession with magnolia cones (pods?)

I love magnolia cones, especially when they are full of those gorgeous red seeds. Each seed feels like a little treasure. And the seeds remind me of this other red seed I loved and collected as a kid.

The leaves are fascinating too: super thick and a glossy green on one side, a matte copper-brown on the other.

My work table is full of these cones, my car dashboard has a few and yet, every time I walk past another cone that’s fallen off a tree I pick it up and bring it home…

Because I could always draw it one more time…

Lovely paintings! I have a star magnolia in my yard, but I haven’t looked for seed pods. Now I am curious……

  2. Fabulous! I appreciate seeing how you’ve tackled this complex object. We have magnolias here, but I’ve never seen the seed pods (different type maybe).
