Tuesday. Music day.
This first one I drew while live on Instagram.
Here’s the video. White gouache highlights added later.
If you’re wondering why I do this crazy camera-in-left-hand, draw-with-right-hand thing, it’s because 1) I’m lazy 2) I don’t have a fixed place I sit and sketch, I just squeeze in someplace near my subject. But mostly because 3) I love sitting very close in to my subjects (the ones at home have learnt to totally ignore me). At this distance, no one is still and even the tiniest movement changes the angle of what you are looking at. A lot. Which means I constantly shift around and crane my neck to try and catch the angle I started with. A fixed camera setup really constrains how I draw and see.
But if you have better ideas of what I can do, let me know, I’d love having my left hand back. Quick, almost immediate setup time and no constraints on sketching are paramount.
In this second sketch, you can see that I abandoned my first attempt when I realized the angle on the arm right at the shoulder was totally wrong. I just drew right over it immediately.
I’m enjoying my InstaLive drawing and chatting sessions and have one coming up on Thursday. Uma Kelkar and I discuss writing books, and look into the similarities and differences in our style of tackling book projects.
