The School Band

I’m at our middle school band concert this time, drawing from halfway down the auditorium. Luckily, I have an aisle seat, and my daughter on the other side of me. It helps to have someone you know next to you, for when you inadvertently elbow them while sketching…
band1After my first sketch (above) , I abandoned my watercolors: they’re quick to work with, but they take too long to dry, so I’m turning pages wet…can you tell?
Watersoluble colored pencils, pen and waterbrush is what I used for the rest of the evening.

I switched to drawing portraits after a while.

And just as I was wishing I was sitting closer upfront for some more dynamic angles, all 180 students performed one last piece together. They couldn’t all fit on stage so they flooded the aisles and played. It was fun to sketch Jonathan looking over my left shoulder, right up at him. Or atleast, fun for me: not sure he found it so much fun to be looking down at his sheet music and see me drawing away furiously in his peripheral vision!

Are you signed up to do the OneWeek100People challenge next week? I am, and I’m looking forward to it!

  2. I joined up for the draw 100 people in a week. I’ll need to put some speed into my arm and hand before then. Thanks for the inspiration.
