Sketching and food go hand in hand for me: I don’t draw my food often, but it’s often deeply tied to drawing on location, especially in India.
I love this pink barber shop at Padel. They’re always full, the haircuts are pretty snazzy and best of all, every time I sketch there, ( I just ask if I can sit down and draw.) I get a treat, and so does everyone else in the shop. Once it was ice-cold Thums Up. A one-liter bottle arrived and all of us that were in the shop got a little cup of it.
The next day, I went back and sketched again. This time we all got Vada Pao.
This is the real thing.
While I sketched this really sweet lady while she cleaned up a portion of little clams called khube and she gave me a recipe for them. Her husband in the background made brooms from coconut palm fronds.
While sketching this little grocer’s store, a cutting chai arrived, courtesy of the owner.
And these two ladies cleaned up two servings of little shrimp (so much more tasty than giant prawns) while we chatted. I sketched quickly to try and get done before they were done, but they are fast! The shrimp? So good with a Bira beer.
More posts from that India trip coming up. If you missed the first two, they’re here:

Amazing details. Looking at the vada pav and thinking of the cutting chai, made me envy you. I am hungry now..!!

Harry, that’s the trouble with my travel sketches: lots of food related stuff, always makes me miss places 🙂
