The Urban Sketchers International Symposium 2018 is in Porto, Portugal this year. Registration opens on 17th February, Saturday, 15:00hrs GMT (yes, that’s this weekend) and usually fills up really soon. If you’re planning on attending, find out more about the symposium here. Once you are done reading up on the workshops, you can use this link to find out more about the types of passes available. Save the link for registration day.
The lineup of 36 instructors has been announced, and I’m excited to be teaching a workshop called People at Work: Quick Capture Vignettes
I’ve been thinking about teaching this workshop for a few years now. It all started with an afternoon spent sketching in the market in Siam Riep, Cambodia in 2015. I’ve always enjoyed drawing people, but standing in that crowded market, capturing quick little vignettes made me think of what it took to make a sketch that captures gesture, character and surrounding: Quickly, simply and with a small kit. We’ll be exploring sketching people, composition and quick watercolor techniques in this workshop.
I’m super honored to be joining an amazing set of instructors in Porto: check the lineup in that first image, it’s really amazing. And, I’m excited to be back in Portugal (my third time, can you tell I love the country?) and meet urban sketchers I’ve come to know well, and new ones.
I hope you can make it!
Sadly I won’t be able to make this but I hope you’ll be able to share some work on your blog! I’ve just booked to go to Porto in October. It will be my first visit so I’m really excited at the prospect of seeing the work that comes out of this year’s symposium!

Thanks so much Suhita – I’m really excited about visiting, I’ve only heard good things about it and I’m sure that seeing all of the work and people’s sketchbooks at the symposium will be really inspiring!
