People sketching at Santana Row

Santana Row on a busy Saturday morning.

Plenty of shoppers and a pretty distinctive building. Perfect for me to play with some of the techniques we’ll use in my upcoming workshop titled People and Places: Life in Contrast at the the 7th International Urban Sketchers Symposium in Manchester, UK, July 27-30, 2016.

The aim of the workshop is to use gestural figure drawing in your sketches and capture whole scenes with people and spaces in quick sketches in a mix of media and techniques.santana_row_crowd

Here I started with an idea of the space I wanted to capture and then focussed on sketching people in pen. Then I switched to graphite pencil to add in the architecture before coming back to color and then a little more line in pen to tie the place and the people together.

Hoping to see you in Manchester! Still on the fence and wondering if you can join in? Registration deadlines have been extended and workshop passes are still available.
