What a difference a great model makes!

Ever notice how everything you draw and paint comes together some days? And on other days, you just never get your act together? It took a day like the latter for me to really think about how amazing models are and how much they bring to a session. When a model is really present, even a really bad day doesn’t look too bad on paper. Something was not-quite right with almost everything I sketched that day, but my sketches did capture how much the model put into her work. From the really active 1-minute poses.

To the quieter 5 minute ones.

To the long pose in repose: which I worked on as a set of little studies: charcoal, then dry pastel and finally the same pastel on wet paper.figure1c

So true. I had a nite like that at the last Dr Sketchys but Saturday drawing session I nailed it all to a t. Guess it’s like baseball sometimes u hit a home run sometimes u don’t?! But the playing the game is always fun!!

Indeed, I always refer models to “performers”. Thank you for sharing.

I totally agree with you and this is also a reason why Art is so interesting. One day you struggle and the day after, it comes naturally. I love your last pastel on wet paper.
