It’s summer vacation when my flickr stream of sketches starts to look like this.

Suhita, I’ve been following you for a few weeks now and am totally inspired! I ran out and got a brush pen and have been having a blast painting people and wedding parties at our local park. I even sold a small one at a plein air event that I organized this weekend. So thanks for all the great tips and generous sharing!

Suhita, can you say more about the Kendama phenomenon? Is it a fad in your community to master it?

    • Lynn, I don’t know whether kendama is local phenomenon here in san jose, california, or nationwide, but every elementary and middle schooler carries one of these toys all the time… I’m going to try and sketch the amazing tricks they do some more…

So interesting. I have never seen my nieces or any of the kids in my area (Brooklyn) with these. I think they are kind of unusual around here.

It’s been very popular here in Hawaii for many years and it’s a particular favorite among the middle grades. The kendama is a Japanese toy that’s hundreds of years old, so I believe the large Japanese influence here in Hawaii had something to do with its popularity. It’s slowly moving it’s way east, so I’m sure more people will see it soon. FYI. πŸ™‚

  6. Lynn, that makes em want to go and sketch the kids playing them some more. Will be fun and I can ask them about the tricks they do. Looks like it’s a rage in many places because I googled ‘kendama’ and everyone’s selling them!
