Last summer weekend

A quick weekend getaway before it’s back-to-school on Monday. A road trip to Pismo Beach, Cambria and San Luis Obispo. Some grey skies. Some sun. And a few quick sketches.

Pismo Cliffs. The beach disappears at high tide.

This is as far as Hari and the kids could venture into the sea. There was a shark sighting warning posted at the beach.

I think I know what the kids like best about staying at a hotel: watching TV. Watching “Shark Week” on Discovery Channel is their idea of a holiday.

Tidepools, Cambria. Nishant and Kavya pick up little hermit crabs and giggle as the crabs run across their hands.

Floatsam and Jetsam. I love those two words. Well actually, just seaweed and pebbles. Moonstone Beach, Cambria. Squiggles and puddles of color and line. Have you noticed how shells and seaweed look so gorgeously colored at the beach, but if you bring them home, they look chalky and dusty? So I didn’t pick anything, I just sketched. The Fremont Theater in San Luis Obispo. I love Art Deco buildings. They might be the only things (places?)  that look good in the color ‘dusty rose’.

Fantastic. I am only a little jealous of the loose quality of your sketches. My favorite is the one of the Fremont theatre.

Fabulous sketches, I love the looseness, not sure which is my favourite, I think the one of the lads watching TV, you have really captured the moment, it says it all.

Do you draw first and then paint? or wash first and then draw over the top? Either way, wonderful! (Always curious about technique.)
