Farmer’s Markets

Sketching at Farmers Markets always poses a dilemma: should I just capture the stalls full of fresh fruits and veges? Or try and build in the sea of humanity that walks through too quickly? If I build in the people, I end up blocking the view of most of the produce, the most attractive, colorful part of the market. Here are a few of my Farmers Market sketches from early in the season. I’d love suggestions on how I capture more of the action…

I think you should be very happy with what you’re doing here. You’ve made the produce the focal point of each sketch, and the people add the human quality..the reason for this lovely collection of fruits and vegetables. I love these sketches!!

I think these are marvelous! The people do seem to be milling around, and I really like the man leaning on the table in the second one. The way the people are layered, even transparent, adds a lot of motion to the sketches, like a series of photographs–excellent!

  5. I think you’ve captured the action and movement quite well, actually, and still had enough room to put in the produce. Wonderful sketches!

You don’t need any suggestions…these pieces really capture the essence of a very complicated scene…I can feel the movement. Keep up the good work.

These are excellent sketches! I love the way you suggest everything with your waves of color. You have both the humanity and the fruit – and it is such a sense of place you provide! So I have no suggestions.
