nice Suhita….i’ve got to get my watercolors going again. recently i have been using a small number of brush pens, which have greater convenience but not the versatility of watercolor…..Ben

ben, i carry a tiny watercolor kit everywhere- the nice thing about combining watercolor and sketching is that i never feel pressured to do a full-blown, watercolor-only piece- most of the time it’s just dabs of color on a pen and ink sketch… you could use the pens like that too…

what brand and model of watercolors do you use? i’d love a suggestion on a small travel set….

i carry a windsor and newton artists colors travel pack. but over time, i’ve changed out some of the colors..i just fill in the pans as they empty out with colors from tubes.

I love your work. It is amazingly spontaneous. The MOMA perspective is unique. Indoors or outdoors, you are a master!
Tell me, do you sketch with pen and ink and then colour afterwards, or everything is on the location? Do they let you use water everywhere, in all those museums?

Anjali, i work completely on location. I find it to be more spontaneous and a better observed piece that way. And yes, I carry water into museums, but it’s probably not wise. I got told off at the MOMA for splashing around with my watercolors. Usually the guards turn a blind eye, though…
it’s pen and ink first for me, then the color. For me, line creates the puzzle, the rhythm, the madness, and color clarifies things.
