Drawing People

I’m working on putting together my workshop at the Urban Sketchers Symposium in Paraty this year. It’s called ‘Never Fear the People!’. We’ll discuss tips and tricks to capturing people, and ways to get over being afraid to draw them, but nothing will substitute for loads and loads of practice. So I’m taking my own advice and filling my sketchbooks with pages of people sketches, whenever I can. Here are some recent ones.

Excellent! How valuable will be your meeting in Paraty!

Years ago when I took a watercolor painting class, we had to do a portrait (from a picture) I was soooo nervous that i made a copy of my daughter’s picture and traced it! That is the one and only time i painted a person. Since then, I have become fascinated with sketching people. I rip out/safe pictires of people from magazines and practice sketching them! So much fun!

Lovely sketches – I find drawing people moving (as opposed to Life Drawing) very difficult and frustrating – I don’t seem to be quick enough. Unfortunately I suspect you are right – practice and more practice!

Hi Suhita, I wonder if you know where the symposium will be next year. I would love to come sometime but only heard of this one now. Love your sketches. grace Haverty

    • Grace, this year’s symposium is still open for registration, if you are interested. Next years symposium gets announced a few months after this one ends, so it will be a while before we know.

I’m one of the administrators for the Seattle USk blog. Great idea for sketching the World Cup. I’m about to post it on our google group. One question: I know how to tag posts on Instagram and Facebook. Can you use hashtags on the blog too? Jane Wingfield
